The songs contrasted with the ambient euphoria. Outside the subway, when I was walking home, I heard a ballad that made my heart stop. The weather, the pain in my legs, and the tiredness had disappeared and something strange happened - my whole being stopped to listen. I felt a sensation of pleasure that rose from my spine to my head. It was a total surrender to the song - "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". And then the street became involved in the next song. The whole album is worth listening to!

First of all, I must say that George Michael has long been on the list of artists I wanted to pay tribute to in my blog, but it was a conversation at my Christmas table that prompted me to write this post, and also because it is sadly close to the anniversary of his death.
George Michael passed me by a bit when I was younger. If you read about some of the groups and artists I have featured on my blog, you'll notice that my "wave" at the time of Wham and even at the beginning of his solo career were The Cure, U2, David Bowie, Siouxie and the Banshees, The Smith, The talking Heads,... Were, very different styles of "Wake me up before you go go". They did not seduce me, they were very moving, dancing, very good-humored, but for me, they were mainly for "girls" the age of my younger sisters. They were the ones who brought home the group and especially this man, "this gorgeous man"... If I had known that years later he, George Michael, would be a permanent part of my adult life, I would have called me crazy! This adoration still continues TODAY! If I remember correctly, there was even a poster of him hanging in their room.

After "A Different Corner" he released his 1st album called "Faith" and released the song of the same name as his 1st "single", creating a master move. He took the plunge and single-handedly created what would turn out to be a massive solo career. The beginning of the video is breathtaking!!! We stand there looking at the attributes of George Michael that we are not prepared for - the glasses, the 3-day beard, the ripped clothes, and how he dances with the guitar during the 3 minutes and makes sure that whoever liked him, like even more with so much hinting. But the album has much more to confuse us.

With "I Want Your Sex" George Michael entered the adult realm, his whole association as a singer for girls ended with this song. I think that's what it was meant for. He wanted to get rid of the image he carried with the Whams, even though it was the Whams who did him. After that, nothing and no one could stop him from doing and writing whatever he wanted.
On the album "Faith" there are more extraordinary songs, the first one is "Father Figure" and it is once again wonderful.

The second is "One More Try." "One More Try" is once again a song about divided and confused feelings and once again he has opened his heart. This image of the wounded man is a very beautiful quality of George Michael. Many of the women who listened to him saw him as a man who could talk about feelings directly for them, something that is rare because men are often raised not to cry. This man does, he takes the right to say what he thinks and show what he feels. I can start with the first song "Praying for Time" - I have to say he didn't promote the album for personal reasons - he was sick of being in front of the camera. These issues would become legal with his lawsuit against his record company Sony Music. Maybe it was much better, (we could just focus on the music). "Praying for Time" is a social critique of poverty that remains very current. The intro of the song, the tempo, the guitar, the intoxicating sound of the synthesizers is perfect!

"Waiting for The Day" is another example of what it's like to be played by a genius. The rhythm, the drums, the guitar, it's all there once again.

George Michael did not promote the album, he was fed up with celebrity, so he decided, and it was the best decision ever, to invite 5 female supermodels with 2 male models and have them sing in playback. The video is still considered one of the best of all time. The music is danceable, the pop-funk rhythm is incredible and the lyrics are liberating, full of meaning because he wanted to free himself from Sony. A feat that has gone down in history!

Cowboys and Angels" is for me the masterpiece of this masterpiece. The beginning is just phenomenal - the piano and then the synthesizer, strings, drums, and saxophone. The whole album has this spatial sound that surrounds us, that engages us, that transports us. It sings to us, it whispers in our ears and it rocks us with this infernal rhythm. The lyrics about a love triangle are the culmination of this astonishment. Who has not experienced that? Love that you can not have? If this situation has left us this song, it's because it was worth it (for us, for me) but for him, after all, I think it must not have been easy.

"Older" as I said above is my baby, you can not even explain it, it's beautiful from the first song. I bought it because back then we still bought records, and on my little stereo, it was on repeat all day. "Jesus to a Child" is just fantastic. Once again, the beginning is phenomenal. The lyrics are perfect, a story about unconditional, timeless love. The video is mysterious, but very well described. What I did not know at the time, and although I got goosebumps listening to the song, is that he wrote the song in honor of his first love Anselmo, who died of complications related to AIDS two years after they met at a concert in Brazil. It takes a lot of love to deserve a song, an album of this caliber.

And I come to the end of this message, which took longer than I thought it would. It was so nice to rediscover George Michael. There is still much to be said, documentaries have been made about his life exposing his drug, alcohol, and sex addictions and the resulting arrests. He even had a terrible bout of pneumonia in 2011 during his Symphonica concert tour and was treated in Vienna - he was very close to death. He died on Christmas Day 2015 and many still remember the feeling they had that day.
It could not end without his concert for his 25th birthday and his performance at the 2012 Olympics. He recorded only a few records, but he was a worldwide success

Antes de mais, tenho de dizer que George Michael está há muito tempo na lista de artistas que eu queria homenagear no meu Blogue, mas, foi uma conversa à mesa do meu jantar de natal que me fez precipitar esta mensagem e também porque, infelizmente, é perto do aniversário da sua morte.

E mesmo se "Hotel Tropicana" continua a ser um convite para a festa e o olhar de George Michael um convite para coisas (muito) marotas, não me convenciam. Hoje, já sou capaz de dançar.

Uma coisa é certa, os Wham foram enormes em termos de venda de discos, e só lançaram 3 discos de originais - venderam 40 milhões de cópias em todo o mundo! Muitas destas músicas são clássicos hoje em dia como: "Last Christmas"; "I´m you Man"; "The edge Of Heaven"; "Freedom" "Everything She Wants" e muitas mais… George Michael já escrevia todas as músicas e tornava-se aos poucos a figura principal do grupo. A sua voz inconfundível desenvolvia-se e ficou uma das melhores vozes masculinas de sempre.

No meio destas músicas dançantes, joviais e divertidas apareceu a primeira e última mais emblemática dos Wham e a primeira mais emblemática do George Michael "Careless Whisper". De cortar a respiração de tão bela que é - o seu início, o saxofone, a guitarra, os arranjos, a voz, tudo nela é perfeita. Ele escreveu esta canção quando tinha apenas 17 anos!? Uma canção sobre uma traição que correu muito bem e eu, mesmo vestida de preto, ignorando todo o passado, sentia o ambiente que emanava deste "Slow", havia algo que me tocava nesta música.

"A Different Corner" lançada por George Michael em 1986 foi uma viragem para o grupo que acabava de lançar o álbum "The Edge Of Heaven". Esta música, outra pérola na vasta obra de George Michael é extraordinária e de forma bem diferente de "Careless Whisper", ela mexeu muito mais comigo, A minha irmã mais nova tinha o disco e quando tocava era esta que eu cantava às escondidas (sabia a letra de cor e salteado).

George Michael tinha essa coisa incrível de começar as suas músicas - vão ver com outras músicas as suas introduções são magistrais. Nesta canção é o homem que canta, que chora, que implora, dá uma imagem de vulnerabilidade como poucos.
Depois de "A Different Corner" ele saiu o seu 1º álbum com o nome "Faith" e lançou a música com o mesmo nome como 1º "single" e conseguiu fazer uma jogada de mestre. Ele mergulhou, ouso, e sozinho criou o que viria a ser uma enorme carreira a solo. O início do vídeo é de cortar a respiração! Estamos lá a contemplar os atributos de George Michael, ao qual não estamos preparados/as - os óculos, a barba de 3 dias, a roupa rasgada e ele a dançar com a guitarra durante os 3 minutos são e fizeram de certeza que, quem já estava apanhada/o por ele ficasse ainda mais com tanta sugestão. Mas o álbum tem muito mais para nos desorientar.

Ele compôs e produziu todo o álbum que foi um sucesso planetário - vendeu mais de 20 milhões de cópias no mundo e esteve em nº 1 durante 1 ano nos EUA. INCRíVEL!

Com "I Want Your Sex", George Michael entrava na esfera dos adultos, toda a sua ligação como um cantor para miúdas acabara com esta canção. Penso que foi pensado para isso. Ele queria desfazer-se da imagem que carregou com os Wham, mesmo se, foram os Wham que o fizeram. Depois, nada nem ninguém podia pará-lo de fazer e escrever sobre o que quisesse.
No álbum "Faith" há outras músicas extraordinárias, a primeira é "Father Figure" e é mais uma vez maravilhoso.

A segunda é "One More Try". "One More Try" é mais uma vez uma canção sobre sentimentos partilhados e confusos e mais uma vez ele abria o seu coração. Esta imagem de homem ferido é uma característica muito bonita de George Michael. Muitas das mulheres que o ouviam reviam nele um homem que conseguia falar sobre as suas emoções e directamente para elas, algo que é raro porque os homens, muitas vezes, são educados para não chorarem. Este homem não, ele súplica o direito de dizer o que pensa e de mostrar o que sente. Muitas músicas icónicas de outros artistas faziam e fazem jus à emoção, mas, com ele a representação de um homem sensível era a inspiração que faltava, sobretudo, depois dos saltos e da vida fácil que os Wham esbanjavam. George Michael abriu muitas portas… e para ele a porta da eternidade.

"Kissing a Fool" é completamente diferente de "Faith" é mais Jazz, Soul mas, mesmo assim, conseguia estar nos primeiros lugares das "Tops" internacionais, uma versatilidade ligada à uma voz incrível.

Ele ganhou tudo o que havia por ganhar nos EUA, incluído o prémio do melhor disco R&B na categoria onde estava Michael Jackson, o que o fez saltar de felicidade.
Chegamos a um dos meus preferidos… Não há nada a acrescentar à "Faith" que o colocou na estratosfera, mas, "Listen Without Prejudice" é para mim qualquer coisa de outro universo. Podem até dizer que sou maluca, mas desculpem-me lá e vamos ouvir em detalho esta obra-prima!
Posso começar pela primeira música "Praying for Time" - tenho de dizer que ele não fez nenhuma promoção do álbum por questões pessoais - estava farto de estar à frente das câmaras. Estas questões viriam a ser judiciais com o processo que ele interpôs contra a sua gravadora Sony Music. Se calhar foi bem melhor, (podíamos focar-nos apenas na música). "Praying for Time" é uma crítica social sobre a pobreza, que continua muito actual. A introdução da música, o tempo, a guitarra, o som inebriante dos sintetizadores é uma perfeição!

"Waiting for The Day" é mais uma amostra do que é ser tocado com genialidade. O ritmo, a bateria, a guitarra, mais uma vez está lá tudo.

George Michael não promovia o álbum, um pouco farto da celebridade e então decidiu e foi a melhor decisão de sempre, convidar 5 supermodelos femininas, com 2 modelos homens e fazê-los cantar em playback. O vídeo é, ainda hoje, considerado como uns dos melhores de sempre. A música é dançante, o ritmo pop funk incrível e a letra é libertadora, cheia de sentido porque ele próprio queria libertar-se da Sony. Um feito que ficou para a história!

"Heal the Pain" e lá vamos nós outra vez com uma música extraordinária. As guitarras, o ritmo a voz de George Michael e a letra são perfeitas.

"Cowboys and Angels" é para mim a obra-prima desta obra-prima. O início é simplesmente fenomenal - o piano e depois a entrada do sintetizador, das cordas, da bateria, com o saxofone à mistura. Todo o álbum tem este som espacial que nos rodeia, que nos integra, que nos transporta. Ele canta para nós, ele sussurra aos ouvidos e balança-nos com este ritmo infernal. A letra sobre um triângulo amoroso é o culminar deste assombro. Quem é que não viveu isso? Amar quem não pode ter? Se esta situação deixou-nos esta música é porque valeu a pena (para nós, para mim) para ele, penso que não deve ter sido fácil.

"Mother´s Pride" é demais. Uma música muito, muito emocional… A letra diz tudo. Ele consegue levar-me às lágrimas. Que chatice George!

O álbum acaba com Waiting (Reprise) e estes 2mn são de puro prazer. Escolhi a versão em concerto porque é bonita, não podia ser de outra forma. Foi a entrada para o seu concerto de comemoração dos 25 anos de carreira! Acabo aqui "Listen without prejudice" e é isso!

Bem "Listen Without Prejudice" é uma obra-prima e "Older" é outra obra-prima. Afinal há mais que uma. Esta mensagem vai ser muito longa, porque "Older" é o meu bebé!
Entre "Listen without Prejudice" e "Older" passaram-se 6 anos em que ele perde contra a Sony Music, mas, é activo em termos de colaborações para as associações de caridade contra a fome e a SIDA.

Ele participa numa compilação de uma grande associação contra a SIDA Red Hot Organization. Quem não ouviu ou tem Red Hot & Blue na sua prateleira, eu tenho! Ele entra em dois discos, Red Hot & Dance e Red Hot & Rio. Ele inclusive compôs 3 músicas de originais e uma delas, volta a ter a colaboração de supermodelos, "Too Funky" e é ele que está atrás da câmara para fazer o vídeo.

Ele faz um disco com músicas de outros artistas que se chama "Five Live" com vários tributos ao Freddie Mercury com os Queen e a clássicos de outros músicos. Todas elas gravadas no Estádio de Wembley ao vivo. O álbum foi criado para angariar dinheiro para uma organização de caridade de combate à SIDA.
Ele entretanto, cria uma gravadora independente e faz mais algumas colaborações, outros tributos que se tornaram clássicos.

"Older", como disse em cima é o meu bebé, não há como explicá-lo, é bonito desde a primeira música. Comprei-o porque na altura ainda se comprava discos e na minha pequena aparelhagem ele tocava em "repeat todo o dia, os dias todos. "Jesus to a Child" é simplesmente incrível. Mais uma vez o início é fenomenal. A letra é perfeita, uma história de amor incondicional, intemporal. O vídeo é misterioso, mas muito bem delineado. Na altura, o que eu não sabia e apesar de ter pele de galinha quando ouvia a música é que ele escreveu a canção em homenagem ao primeiro amor da sua vida - Anselmo, que morreu de complicações relacionadas com a SIDA, 2 anos depois de se terem conhecido num concerto no Brasil. É preciso amar muito para merecer uma canção, um álbum deste calibre.

Depois de "Jesus To A Child" há a música mais dançante e bem-disposta do álbum. "FastLove" acompanhado de um vídeo muito sugestivo, tal como a letra. Foi um sucesso mundial. A facilidade com que George era capaz de fazer músicas comerciais era incrível. A música corta um pouco a atmosfera do disco que mais uma vez foi feito para homenagear o seu namorado.

Depois veio "Spinning the Wheel", muito jazz, soul, muito interessante para mim, adorei! Uma música sobre a falta de cuidados que algumas pessoas tinham em relação ao SIDA.

"Older" é mais uma das canções que nos toca lá no fundo… Uma música muito bem conseguida, o início é mais uma vez extraordinária, a voz é perfeita, a trompeta, a letra, tudo. Ele está mais velho, mais sentimental, mais verdadeiro - era ele a cantar sobre envelhecer e eu a envelhecer com ele.

"I Can´t make you love me" é um "cover" de George Michael da música de Bonnie Raitt e faz parte do disco, lançada como o lado B de "Older". Vou partilhar a versão ao vivo "Unplugged" porque é extraordinária a maneira como ele a canta.

O álbum tem outras músicas que não foram escolhidas como singles, mas são todas muito boas: "It Doesn´t matter"; "The Strangers Things"; "To Be Forgiven", "Move On", e "Free". Vou partilhar algumas destas músicas.
"To Be Forgiven" é uma balada, muito jazz, e mais uma vez adoro tudo nela, mesmo se, existe uma perda de fé e a percepção de se estar a perder o controlo. Cantava na cozinha dos meu pais e dançava e mais nada. É a vossa vez de cantar.

"You have been Loved" é uma declaração de amor para o seu namorado Anselmo que morreu de Sida pouco depois de se conhecerem. A trompeta toca outra vez os céus. Vou partilhar a letra que é de uma grande beleza. Escolhi a versão "Unplugged" porque é tão bem cantada que fico sempre toda arrepiada e lacrimejante.

Em 1996 George Michael ganha prémios pelo seu álbum "Older" e faz o maravilhoso concerto "Unplugged" do qual retirei alguns vídeos.
E porque me apetece, porque eles estão sempre por aí!

Em 1998, enquanto a nossa vida corria e ouvíamos "Frozen" de Madonna, as Spice Girls, Natalie Imbruglia víamos Amargedon e Titanic no cinema, George Michael era preso por fazer um "Lewd Act" Ato Lascivo numa casa de banho em Beverly Hills. Ninguém melhor que ele para explicar o que aconteceu no Letterman Show, com muito sentido de humor! Um dos maiores "Coming Outs" da história!

Na entrevista no Parkinson Show ele fala de tudo, e também do episódio da casa de banho, mas, o que me chamou à atenção e o que ele diz acerca da sua identidade, da sua sexualidade depois do minuto 30. Eu penso que muitos de nós poderão rever-se nas suas palavras porque fazem muito sentido: -"tive muitas oportunidades, não tive nenhum amor, não me apaixonava por ninguém na escola, no início da minha carreira pensei que era bissexual, tive muitas experiências, mas não tinha nenhuma ligação emocional e o dia em que soube que era Homossexual foi quando me apaixonei por um homem. Nesta altura já não era um problema, soube o que me estava a faltar todo este tempo,…, não tem nada a ver com quem podes "curtir" é sobretudo com quem podes "curtir" e amar." É muito bonito e explica muito bem o que algumas pessoas passam em termos de confusão pessoal antes de se assumirem à elas próprias.
Em 1998 George Michael lança a compilação "Ladies & Gentlemen" com duas músicas novas e uma delas é a resposta à letra à sua interpelação com a música "Outside". Na altura, foi o que eu pensei, que este homem era demais, divertido, resiliente e se era para dançar e rir de toda a situação então era para obedecer! A música foi um sucesso planetário!

Bem se esta mensagem já é uma maravilha, basta ouvir ou ouvir de novo as músicas de George Michael, ela vai continuar a te surpreender. Na altura George Michael não conseguia escrever, não se sentia inspirado e então fez um álbum de "covers" de músicas que ele chamou "Songs From The Last Century". O álbum foi um sucesso comercial. O único vídeo feito foi da música "Roxane" dos "The Police".

"Pacience" é o quinto álbum e voltou a juntar-se à Sony Music. A primeira música lançada foi "Freeek". A batida é excepcional, muito funky, dançante e o vídeo que acompanha a música é muito, mas, muito provocador e muito sexual.

Desafiador e opinativo em relação à guerra do Iraque, ao qual ele estava contra, ele faz um vídeo muito divertido, para mim na altura e agora também, em que ele crítica a posição de Tony Blair em se alinhar com os Estados unidos. Vamos dançar?

"Amazing" é mais uma música muito mexida e extraordinária que contém muito sentimento - ele escreveu para o namorado com o qual ele estava na altura, Kenny. A Letra, apesar de tudo, fala do amor que ele perdeu e que teve muita dificuldade em esquecer. Durante 10 anos George não actuava nos EUA. Escolheu a Oprah para o fazer. A melhor escolhas de sempre. O vídeo dele a cantar é mais uma vez fantástico!

Uma grande canção que nos faz pensar no nosso destino. Muitos pensam que ele pode ter escrito a música sobre influência de substâncias, mas eu penso o contrário, ele estava bem lúcido quando escreveu esta obra. Escolho a versão ao vivo em Paris em 2012 porque é perfeita…

"My Mother Had a Brother" é simplesmente bonita. Não pode ser vista aqui, mas vão ver a versão ao vivo que está no Facebook, vale a pena. Não contenham as lágrimas… Eu chorei o tempo todo quando a ouvi e devo dizer que a descobri a pouco tempo porque adoro e vejo recorrentemente o concerto dos 25 anos em Londres. Como é que me passou, já não passa!

Ele ainda fez um disco, uma compilação dos seus sucessos que se chama "Twenty Five" em 2006. Um dos Singles é "An Easy Affair" e o vídeo é incrível, a música é um convite à dança e a mensagem é claramente um hino à liberdade com fundo de Orgulho LGBT. "Well Done!"

Finalmente, chego ao fim desta mensagem que demorou mais tempo que eu pensava. Foi tão bom redescobrir George Michael. Muito há por dizer ainda, foram feitos documentários sobre a sua vida a expor a sua adição às drogas, ao álcool e ao sexo e, às prisões que resultarem dessas situações. Ele inclusive teve uma pneumonia terrível em 2011 durante a tournée do seu concerto Symphonica e foi tratado em Viena - esteve muito perto da morte. Morreu no dia de Natal 2015 e muitos/as, ainda se lembram do sentimento que tiverem nesse dia.
Não podia acabar sem por o concerto dos 25 anos e a sua performance nos Jogos Olímpicos de 2012. Ele fez poucos discos, mas, ele foi um sucesso planetário. 👍

"White Light" é sobre a experiência que teve no hospital e, um agradecimento aos doutores e enfermeiras que e o salvaram.
Só posso dizer que faz-nos muita falta! Esta mensagem, esta homenagem ao jovem que eu achava irritante, mas, que se transformou ao longo da minha vida num homem que partilha muitas vezes os meus dias, é feita com todo o meu coração. Espero que reviver George Michael possa dar-nos um novo alento nas nossas vidas. Viver e reviver, ouvir e ouvir de novo e olhar para ele a dançar a chorar e dançar e chorar com ele. Era e ficará para sempre um enorme artista!
